I sold a purse on ebay and the buyer is in Canada. I know I have to fill out a customs form at the USPS when i ship out, so my question is does the value I put down have the be the value of the purse? And does the recipient get taxed a fee based on the amount I put down? The buyer asked if I could put down that the purse is a gift and $20, if I do this, will they be taxed less? And do I have to pay anything for customs? thanks!

  1. You don't pay anything for customs.  The receiver will have to pay the duties/taxes levied on the shipment.  However, you should understand that it is illegal to misrepresent the value of goods. There is a very small chance that you would get caught, but it could result in fines up to $50,000.  Just thought you should know.

  2. You pay nothing for the customs form. You can put whatever amount you want to, but the price you put down should be the value of the purse, particularly if you are insuring the package. If you put it as a "gift" on the customs form, they do not have to pay duty taxes. It's up to you whether you want to go along with that.
