  1. Norwegian does this

    i went on it

yes you could eat with anyone and anything

i liked it better then beings formal

  2. Norwegian does this, but so does Princess. Princess calls it anytime dinning. Most all cruise ships have a buffet that also lets you dine anytime too. Norwegian just is the only one that goes to great lengths to advertise it.

  3. Norwegian Cruise line has "FREESTYLE cruising"; you go to dinner any time after about 5:30 to 6:00 PM each day. They seat people in the main dining rooms on a first come first served basis, but you can reserve a time and/or table for 2/4/6 if you want.  If you are going to one of their many specialty restaurants you need to make a reservation at most of them.

Princess has "PERSONAL CHOICE" cruising which is essentially the same. BUT, you can elect to go to dinner any time each day after about 5:30 to 6:00 PM, OR you can elect to have the traditional dinner seatings at 6:00 PM or 8:30 PM.

Holland America has the same as Princess called "AS YOU WISH", you go whenever you want after 5:30 to 6:00 PM, OR pick a time for dinner.

All three of these cruise lines have optional dining restaurants. Most ships on Holland and Princess have 2 or 3 alternatives. Norwegian has the most alternatives with up to 8 or 9 on some ships. These alternatives places typically charge a fee/gratuity of between $5. and $25 per person per visit. Some of the alternative restaurants on NCL ships do not have a fee.

Royal Caribbean has started  to test the freestyle or optional dining on some of its ships.  I think it's called "Your Way" cruising and it works the same as on Princess and Holland, you can have a set time for dinner, or go whenever you want.

Now you can really be informal for dinner on all cruise ship, although NCL is the one that advertises the most informality.  All cruise ships have a buffet that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and its always casual dining, all you need on is shoes and no swim wear that is not covered.  The buffets have great food for all meals and many choices.  You serve yourself and sit wherever you want.
