Shireen Sapiro earns Women’s 100m backstroke gold: Day one - South African Long Course Nationals
Shireen Sapiro of CGA-CG earned the title of Women’s 100m backstroke in S1-S13 Multi-Class category on first day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Monday, April 16.
The 21-year-old Sapiro served notice of her wonderful efforts by occupying gold medal of the event. Sapiro, who qualified into the final as top fastest swimmer, sustained her position in the playoff to secure the podium for gold medal.
With her epic performance, she remained in a prominent lead over her challengers from the start of the event. Her notable efforts remained nearly two body lengths ahead of her subsequent competitor as she tapped the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 10.70
seconds.
Her scintillating effort remained 4.08 seconds slower from her following swimmer, Natalie Du Toit, who clocked a time of 1 minute and 14.78 seconds for silver medal.
The second position holder of the discipline was trailed by Emily A Gray of NTS-NT, who failed to substantiate her efforts in the playoff and seized third fastest spot on the victory stand for bronze medal.
The 20-year-old Gray stayed nearly two seconds slower from her former finisher and reached the podium with the timing of 1 minute and 16.88 seconds.
She was followed by Renette Bloem of WPA-WP, who stayed considerably slower from her former finisher and emerged on the finishing end for fourth position by producing an effort of 1 minute and 45.08 seconds.
The 48-year-old Bloem was chased by her team-member, Tezna K Abrahams, who occupied fifth best position of the discipline by clocking an effort of 1 minute and 33.16 seconds.
The 16-year-old Abrahams was followed by Sarah-Joan Shannon of Fsa-FS, who completed her swim in sixth place by clocking a time of 3 minutes and 06.17 seconds.
The 30-year-old Shannon was chased by Dimakatso M Makgakga, who occupied seventh position of the discipline by producing a time of 1 minute and 41.04 seconds.
In addition, the audience applauded for ruthless efforts of all position holders in their exclusive events at the prize ceremony of the championship.
