Shirocco Star and Coquet to avail more opportunities after delivering solid performances in the Investec Oaks
Trainer Hughie Morrison is pleased with the performance of his runners Shirocco Star and Coquet in the Investec Oaks, which took place on 1st June, 2012, at Epsom.
Shirocco Star, daughter of Shirocco, out of mare Spectral Star, was paired with jockey, Darryll Holland, and they came close to winning the Oaks, but it was notched by the A .P. O'Brien trained, Was, by a marginal difference of a neck.
Coquet, who is owned by Hon Mary Morrison and Partners, finished in sixth place in the same race, 5 ¾ lengths behind, Was.
Morrison was pleased with this solid finish as she struggled in the middle of the race, but still came out strong. He commented on the setback, Coquet, faced in the Investec Oaks, and stated she could have claimed a placed finish in these words:
“She had the worst run of any horse in the Oaks because she was physically stopped at the critical point.”
He further added: “Coquet may have run into a place if she had not been stopped."
Morrison is considering the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot for both of these runners, but Shirocco Star might run in the Darley Irish Oaks instead.
Confirming this, Morrison stated:
"Shirocco Star is absolutely bouncing, maybe Coquet had a harder race, I don't know. We'll find out more in the next few days, but they both seem fine.
"They are both in the Ribblesdale and Shirocco Star is in the Irish Oaks, so we might wait for that for her. There is a possibility we could go for the Ribblesdale with her.”
Both of these runners have been in incredible form and will bring their best forward in the future races.
Out of four starts, Shirocco Star finished thrice as a runner-up and claimed a victory in the Julia Tooth Memorial EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Newbury in October, 2011, where she defeated, Varnish, by half-length.
Coquet completed a brilliant hat-trick with a victory in the Height of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood on 24th May, 2012, where she defeated the Mahmood Al Zarooni trained, Minidress.
It doesn’t matter where these fillies go, they will deliver terrific performances.
