In the latest round of Russian Premier League action, Zenit St. Petersburg managed to claim a 2-2 draw against Kuban Krasnodar at Kuban stadium. Though the host team took a two-goal lead, Zenit managed to claim a vital point after
coming from behind.
Kuban’s Lacina Traore put in an excellent performance by scoring a first-half brace, whereas http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andrei-Arshavin-c5771 and Roman Shirokov scored to restore parity.
In the aftermath of the outcome, Roman Shirokov has lamented the situation, admitting that the entire team is disappointed with the result despite claiming a point against the Cossacks.
“Of course we wanted to win, there’s no doubt about that. We proved that we don’t want to win after coming from behind. But we should have not conceded two goals knowing that a win will confirm us as Russian top division champions
prior to the games remaining.
“Everything was going fine until we conceded the opening goal. But we must appreciate the way Kuban started the second half.” The Russian Cup winner was quoted as saying.
Shirokov went on to praise Kuban’s striker, Lacina Traore, admitting that the Ivorian national was on top of the Zenit defence. He added that Traore needs a little appreciation for his fantastic second goal.
Though the latest draw has not affected Zenit’s league position, the Meshki missed a decent opportunity to confirm their title chances. With four league games left to play, Zenit are atop the league table with 81 points, 13 points
ahead of their closest rivals Spartak Moscow.
Shirokov went on to urge his side to win the remaining matches of the ongoing campaign if they are to retain the league title. He warned the St. Petersburg clubs against complacency and told them to work harder.
Commenting on who will claim the second-spot, the former Rubin Kazan player refused to name a favourite, revealing that it’s not important.
