Roman Shirokov has backed the St. Petersburg club to reclaim the Russian Premier League title next season and has denied signing a contract extension at Petrovsky stadium
Zenit St. Petersburg failed to trim down CSKA Moscow’s lead at the top of the Russian Premier League table following their 1-1 draw against Rostov at Rostov-on-don on Sunday. The host came from behind and scored the equaliser from
the penalty spot.
The St. Petersburg club had a chance to retain the league title this season should they continued their fantastic run. With only one game remaining until the end of the ongoing campaign, they cannot spoil the Moscow-based club’s
title celebration part.
Zenit, meanwhile, suffered the latest defeat on the back of a 1-0 defeat in the Russian Cup semi-final against Anzhi Makhachkala.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roman-Shirokov-c31645 has lamented the Russian outfit’s latest draw against the Selmashi, saying that they could have done better and claimed all three points on the away turf in order to keep alive their slim hopes of retaining the league
title this season.
CSKA, on the other hand, ended any lingering anxieties after confirming their title credentials following Sunday’s 1-4 win against Lokomotiv Moscow at Lokomotiv stadium. As things stand, they are five points clear on the top.
“I will say that the second place - this is not so bad, but not what we expected, but judging from everything that was in the course of the season, the result is good.
“We thought that Lokomotiv will give them a tough time but CSKA turned the game in their favor after scoring quick goals,” The former Rubin Kazan man was quoted as saying.
News in Russian media has linked Shirokov with a move away from St. Petersburg this summer, with the likes of Schalke 04 and AS Roma hinted at signing the 31-year-old Russian International.
“I have a valid contract at Zenit and I want to respect that but if they do not offer me a new contract, I will see what I can do,” He concluded.
Shirokov went on to tell that he is likely to leave his current club should a suitable offers comes in the near future.
