my shihtze has lost weight, and wont eat or drink unless forced liquids. she gave birth to her first litter about 2 weeks ago. I have also noticed her gums and tongue are really pale, almost white.

I try to stand her up and she just falls over, and if she does try to walk, she drags and gives up.

We are having to bottle feed the pups because she is dried up.

I don't think it has anything to do with the puppies, I just don't know what is wrong. She was so good the first week, she was full of energy after the pups were born, she ate drank and was fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. The same thing happened to my dog ( she is also a shitzue). The only difference is that my dog is 3 months old. She also couldn't stand up and she would also fall and collapse when we forced her up. I took her to the vet the next day and we found out that she was anemic. She needed a blood transfusion. Take her to the vet NOW... Your dog is in great danger. All the symptoms are there. White gums and falling over. You could also force her to eat the dog nutrients that comes in a toothpaste looking tube. Good luck

  2. Okay, say it was your first born child who had white gums and tongue, and when you tried to stand her up, she would fall over and "give up". And you allowed this to go on for 3 days. What would a god parent do in this case? I say emergency room, or at the very least a mandatory doctor visit.

Now the dog? What would a good pet owner do? Emergency vet, or at the very least a scheduled appointment. No stranger over the internet is going to do a slightest thing to help your dog. You need to go to a vet! I cannot imagine allowing my dog to live in these conditions with no medical help.

Edit: To me it sounds like an issue with the circulatory system. Like someone said, an infection is likely considering she recently devlivered. This is why it is best to consult a vet for pregnancies. If an infection is left unoticed and untreated, it can spread through the entire body and eventually become impossible to deal with, leading to death. The dog does need vet care, $600 or not. It might just be a life or death situation for her.

When you decided to breed her, you took the risk of the array of health complications that can come along with birthing to the mother, as well as all the possible health problems with puppies. So in other words, breeding is VERY expensive, usually. You really need to be financially steady when breeding animals in case problems like these come up and even expect expensive vet care like this.

So try calling some more clinics and explain her symptoms. You might find a cheaper one or one with better payment options. But please take better precaution before breeding ever again.

  3. I would get the dog to an emergency animal hospital ASAP. I don't know for sure whats going on but it doesn't sound good. take her in the morning or tonight if one is open.

  4. go to the vet!!  it sounds like she cold have a infection!!

  5. Urgent that you get her to the vet she is very sick!

  6. Did I go into the wrong section again? oh wait, this is the CAT SECTION. Go ask the DOG SECTION, you might find people there that have dogs...

    Good luck!

  7. She's so sick that her gums are pale and she can't stand up and you haven't left for an emergency vet yet?  We have a Shih Tzu and I can't imagine letting him lay there, unable to stand up and falling over and getting on this forum to ask us what to do.

I'm sure its something serious related to her giving birth.  If you love this dog take it to a vet and you can't get there fast enough.

Edit: Can you borrow the money?  Find a vet that will let you pay half now and half later?

  8. Take her to another emergency vet then...get her to ANY vet right away.  If this has been going on for 3 days...you had plenty of opportunity to get here to a regular vet where the charges are not as much as an emergency vet.  Your dog IS going to die without treatment...get it to a vet NOW!

  9. Something this extreme needs a vet visit. It may be anemia, it may be lack of calcium (the pups are taking nourishment from her, which means she's needing to feed them as well as nourish herself--she should be on a high protein diet not normal dog food).

Since she's not even able to stand up, you should have had her seen by the vet days ago.

  10. Get to a vet now!!!!!!!
