Shiv Kapur secures his card for the Open Championship – Golf News
Shiv Kapur finished second at the 36-hold Local Final Qualifying (LFQ) event in Dunbar, Scotland, securing one of three Open Championship berths.
The Indian star started his campaign with a one-under par 69, followed by a strong run in the second round that saw him recording six birdies to post a flawless 64 on the leaderboard.
At the end of the day, he found himself accumulating a seven-under par overall score and successfully secured his second start in the oldest major in the world of golf.
His first appearance in the third major of the season came in 2006 at Hoylake, where he missed the cut by one stroke.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he expressed his pleasure in overcoming difficult playing conditions during the qualifying tournament.
“I wanted to try and to qualify on a links course because I think that’s the proper way to do it. It was the first time I had played a links course since this time last year, so it was all a bit strange to start with, but I soon
got the hang of things again,” he said,
He also plans to rely on his coach Alberto Binaghi, who also coaches Italian star Matteo Manassero and is a part of the Italian Golf Federation, when he tees off at the Open on July 18.
“I’ve been working with Alberto for the last few months. We had a three hour session in Milan earlier this week and we worked mainly on my short game and hitting shots in the wind. I think that helped a lot,” added Kapur.
Courtesy of his recent form on the Asian Tour – he has recorded two top-five finishes so far in this season – he is confident to perform better, compared to his last performance in the Open Championship.
The reigning Order of Merit champion Thaworn Wiratchant, the current Asian Tour Order of Merit leader Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee have already made it into the field of the Open Championship.
KJ Choi and YE Yang, in the meantime, will join the elite field courtesy of their honorary membership status.
