Shiv Kapur takes home the Shubhkamna Champions title
Shiv Kapur fired a seven-under par 65, in the final round of the Shubhkamna Champions golf tournament, to end his seven-year winless streak, on Sunday, December 23, 2012.
The inaugural edition of the tournament was being staged at the Noida Golf Club, featuring a total of 30 players from different parts of the world.
The legendary Jeev Milkha Singh was the host of the ‘tournament of champions’ and brought together 20 PGTI champions of the 2012 golf season and 10 International tour members, who contended for the INR6 million prize purse.
Kapur, whose last victory came at the Volvo Masters of Asia in 2005, remained consistent right from the beginning of the tournament.
He marked a decent start to his campaign on Friday, by carding a four-under par 68 in the opening round, and followed that with a 66 on day two.
The final round witnessed him making a strong charge to surge to the top of the leaderboard, after posting a sparkling 65 on his scorecard.
"It feels absolutely great to end the year with a win and a money off the back considering it has been seven years since I won in Thailand in 2005. I have been close many times," said Kapur.
"I have been happy with my game and even though I am going to take a break and be away from golf for a while, I can't wait to get back and start practice," he added.
Talking about his performance on day three, he said that the turning point came at the 12th hole, when he saved the par. Earlier, he birdied that 10th hole, followed by a bogey on the 11th hole. Therefore, another bogey in a row could have shattered his confidence.
According to the veteran Indian, his brilliant putting form was the major reason behind his success in the tournament.
"I holed a crucial par putt after missing a short birdie putt on 10th and then bogeying the 11th. Back-to-back bogeys may have spoilt the momentum,” he said.
The overnight leader Daniel Chopra, in the meantime, carded a two-under par 70, to finish second on the leaderboard.
