Shiv Sena pledges support for Dilip Vengsarkar in Mumbai Cricket Association elections – Cricket News Update
Shiv Sena, an Indian political party, has ensured its support to the group of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dilip-Balwant-Vengsarkar-c54093, the former captain of Team India, in the upcoming elections of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), on July 15, 2011.
Vengsarkar is lined up against Sharad Pawar and Vilasrao Deshmukh for the post of the President of the association.
All three candidates will have to file their nominations by July 7 and they are allowed to withdraw them by July 12.
Dilip is one of the cricketing legends of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 Cricket Association and is keen to take the top slot.
Shiv Sena leaders are backing Dilip in a bid to separate politics from cricket, as the other two candidates are non-cricket figures while Dilip is a former cricketer.
Talking to media, Uddhav Thackeray, the Executive President of Shiv Sena, said, “Due to politicisation in cricket administration, players have been distanced (from administration). Have politicians like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Deshmukh-c53820 held a cricket bat
in their hands ever?"
He further stated, “We feel the MCA polls is the right opportunity to save cricket and throw politicians out of the MCA pitch.”
The chief of the party, Bal Thackeray, happens to be a cricket lover himself and wants to bring in a cricketing personality MCA’s leadership.
Uddhav revealed, “Even the Shiv Sena chief (Bal Thackeray) is an ardent cricket fan but is opposed to politics on the cricket field. Why should politicians rule MCA?"

Some analysts fear that Sena’s support for Dilip is not without interests and Bal might use the cricketer once he is elected as president of the association.
