Shivam Sharma secures Men’s Singles title at Up State Senior Badminton Championships
India’s upcoming shuttler Shivam Sharma lived up to expectations as he won the Men’s Singles title by beating his lower ranked team-mate Arshalan Naqvi in the final clash at the Up State Senior Badminton Championships on Sunday, August 26, in India.
The aggressive Shivam, who was seeded at number one in Men’s Singles main draw in the tournament, worked really hard in the final battle to overpower his gritty opponent Arshalan who was an un-seeded player in the draw.
The higher ranked Shivam took the first set with a narrow difference but lost the second game to his rival. However, he proved his brilliance in the deciding set and won the fight in three games by working for 70 minutes on court.
In the meanwhile, the un-seeded Arshalan proved a tough nut to crack for his top-seeded opponent as he put up staggering show and took the second game before losing the match with a respectable margin on score board.
In the first game, both shuttlers played at the same level and it was the lower ranked Arshalan who did not allow his opponent to set up a comfortable lead until the mid-game interval.
After taking break for one minute, the in-form Shivam started to play at his best speed all the way to wind up the game with a tight 21-19 score on the board.
In the second set, Arshalan also played dominating badminton as he took over the control from his higher ranked compatriot and established a reasonable lead until the break.
The top seeded Shivam tried his best to create pressure on his rival but failed to live up to expectations as he made many un-forced errors and lost the set with a 17-21 score on the board.
In the decider, Shivam did not lose his grip in the opening points and managed a reasonable lead until the end of opening half.
After the interval, the impressive Shivam played with precision in his shots and remained positive all the way to clinch the set with a 21-16 margin on the board.
Shivam won the title after ending up the final contest in three games by putting up a thrilling 21-19, 17-21 and 21-16 score on the board.
