Former West Indies cricketer, Shivnarine Chanderpaul says the West Indies Cricket Board selectors forced him to quit the game, at the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2011.
He claimed that he was dropped from the Caribbean squad when he refused to comply. He sought explanations for the West Indies Cricket Board’s treatment towards him in a letter to the WICB Chief, Ernest Hilaire.
Chanderpaul, in his latest letter to the WICB management, stated, "That the WICB selectors asked me to retire and were upset when I refused to do so.”
The controversy started on April 25, 2011, with the controversial statements issued by WIBC Chief, Hilaire. Two days later, Chanderpaul addressed the matter in his letter to Hilaire.
The WICB chief responded to the former cricketer’s letter on April 29, 2011, clarifying that no names were mentioned in his comments and his statements were based on the opinions of the former coaches. He further cited Chanderpaul as a valued player of the
West Indies first squad.
Chanderpaul, however, questioned the basis of the decision of his exclusion from the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 squad. The left-handed batsman argued, "As far as you are concerned I was dropped from the team not for lack of performance, age, fitness and/or discipline but
it is the new direction WICB is going in. What direction is that, when three of the four best batsmen are dropped from the team?"
The cricketer expressed his disappointment over Hilaire’s comments that accused the West Indies Player Association for offering wrong advices to Chanderpaul.
Chanderpaul added, "It is therefore distressing that you blame WIPA by implication, if not overtly, for my letter saying that WIPA was offering me "ill advice". You may not be aware but I have faced the best bowlers in the world in my career and I know how
to counter-attack. Furthermore, I am my own man and would ask that you respect that!"
He added that the Board had been negligent of his health issues during the last Australian tour, where he had to bear the medical expenses for his injuries.
