Shiwen Ye secures Women’s 200m IM crown: Day two – 2011 FINA World Championships
Day two of the 2011 FINA World Championships saw the impressive performance of Shiwen Ye in the final of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) meet in Shanghai, China, on Monday, July 26.
Ye of China grabbed the golden crown with a winning time of 2 minutes and 08.90 seconds. While speaking about her individual performance, Ye stated that she was really impressed and astonished with the results in the World Championships.
Previously, Shiwen Ye snared two silver medals in the Women’s 200m and 400m IM meet at the 2010 World Championships, in Dubai. In the corresponding categories, Ye also grabbed two gold medals at the 2010 Asian Games, in Guangzhou.
In the meantime, Alicia Coutts of Australian took home the silver medal after she touched the finishing wall in an impressive time of 2 minutes and 09.00 seconds. More importantly, the win also gave Coutts her first ever title at the World Championships.
While speaking about her performance, Coutts said, “There's just that little element of disappointment of being so close to gold but it all comes with experience. It's nothing to be upset about. I know that I did my best and, leading into this, the focus
was still London.”
Coutts won five gold medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, in Delhi. Besides, she secured two silver and one bronze medal at the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, in Irvine.
Meanwhile, Ariana Kukors of United States snared the bronze medal with a time of 2 minutes and 09.12 seconds. Stephanie Rice of Australian wound up fourth in 2 minutes and 09.65 seconds, while Caitlin Leverenz of United States earned the fifth place honours
with a time of 2 minutes and 10.40 seconds.
In the respective meet, Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was placed sixth with a time of 2 minutes and 11.24 seconds, whereas, Hannah Miley of Great Britain wound up seventh after she touched the wall in 2 minutes and 11.36 seconds. Julia Wilkinson of Canada settled
eighth in a time of 2 minutes and 16.18 seconds.
