The Pakistan Cricket Board has expressed the intent to question all-rounder Shoaib Malik after his return to Pakistan, following his participation in a domestic http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 club tournament without seeking the permission of his own board, or the BCCI.
“We were unaware his involvement,” a board official told Pakistan daily The Express Tribune. “We’ll question him since he’s a centrally contracted player but we cannot take any decision without hearing from him.”
Malik, an ex-http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, Malik arrived in Delhi on June 5, and played one match for
the club on the same day, at the Modern School (Barakhamba Road) ground, scoring a total of 26 runs.
However, when informed of the event, a senior BCCI official claimed that while the board was unaware of the Pakistani cricketer’s participation in the event, it was a clear violation of the BCCI’s rule which barred foreign players from participating in all
domestic tournaments save the Indian Premier League.
The rule of restricting foreign players from Indian domestic tournaments has been in effect for the past three years. An unofficial ban on the participation of Pakistani players in the IPL has also put into effect by the BCCI since the 2008 http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 terrorist
attacks, after which the bilateral sporting ties between the two countries came to an abrupt halt.
Secretary of the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA), S K Bansal, claimed that they were unaware of the BCCI’s rule, and so had not considered it necessary to inform the board regarding Malik’s participation. Bansal also added that the 30-year-old
had played in a similar domestic tournament last year, and no permission had been sought then.
Downplaying the potential controversy in the making, another PCB official argued that the incident was of little consequence, owing to the fact that the tournament had not been organised by the BCCI to begin with.
“The event wasn’t held under the BCCI’s umbrella,” he said. “Participation in an ordinary event is not an offence. The permission is required for sanctioned and major leagues or tournaments. We haven’t received any message from the BCCI yet.”
