Shock Therapy concern?

I'm interested on what are the many reasons why it is done? Can it even cure minor things such as obsession? (Or things you believe about yourself that is false to others, like anorexia)

ECT is usually for those with severe depression and occassionally mania that do not respond to medication.  There is high probability for some memory loss, and it is not always effective.  To the best of my knowledge, it's not used and would not be effective for altering belief systems.

It should be outlawed! No human being should be exposed to such neanderthal ways of "therapy"! It may have short term effects, but the long term effects are far more cruel!

ECT should never be used unless as a last resort, usually with cases of severe depression and the like that don't respond to other treatments.
