Question:

Shocking my hot tub?

I have a new hot tub and have been told i should shock it every week or so. A friend said regular bleach can be used and is less expensive. Is this true? If not what should I use? I already use floating bromine tablets and the hot tub came with an ozonator.

  1. yes you can use bleach but i wouldn't unless it was absolute necessary got to a pool place a they will tell you everything that you will need all it is is shock for hot tubs

  3. Yes you can use Sodium Hypochlorite, (Common liquid 13% bleach).  The unfortunate thing is that it is not very powerful compared to Sodium Dichlor and has no ability to last more then minutes and of course smells unpleasant.  Personally I never recommend using any chlorines for the weekly shocking of a hot tub.  I prefer a non-chlorine shock (Potassium monopersulfate) since it is an excellent oxidizer.  Lowe's hardware stores carry it in the swimming pool section in a 2.5# container for $7.95 usually.  The nice thing is that it will have no odor.
