Question:

Shoes for a flat-footed racehorse...?

I have a 7 year old trotting mare with flat front feet. Right now she has bar shoes on, but they are contracting her heels. I want to do some corrective shoeing and of course have her comfy and sound by race time. Any suggestions?? Anyone have luck with glue on shoes in this situation?

  1. Calll your local vet. He/she may be able to help you

  2. When it comes to a horse's feet ALWAYS talk to your farrier/blacksmith.  They are the best people in this situation.

We've had horses with glue on shoes in the past, but they are not great, and our horses were all broodmares, retired from racing.

To be honest, if she has bad feet you may want to consider retiring her from racing.  You wouldn't want to be a pro runner with bad feet would you?

  3. Flat feet aren't uncommon in any of the racing breeds.  Even regular shoes should provide enough elevation to protect her sole from pressure.  I've not heard of bar shoes causing contracted heels either unless there is an improper fit or other issue.

The only thing the farrier book states on flat feet is a wide web shoe and to hollow the foot side surface of the shoe a little to prevent sole pressure.

For mild contracted heels they advise keeping moisture in the foot to allow it to flex and expand and increase circulation, a clay pack works well for this.  They also mention keeping weight on the foot, it could be something to check.

Good luck with her.  You may do well to have a second farrier look at her.
