Shon Wan Ho ousts Ajay Jayaram in Men’s Singles round-of-16 at Australian Open Grand Prix Gold
Korea’s Shon Wan Ho passed a tough test in Men’s Singles round-of-16 when he defeated India’s Ajay Jayaram with a tight margin at Australian Open Grand Prix Gold in Sydney, on Thursday, April 5.
The World Number 18 Wan Ho, who was the seventh seed in Men’s Singles draw of Australian Open, had to employ all of his reserves to chuck out Jayaram in a thrilling fashion.
The Korean consumed 60 minutes in the court to overpower his Indian opponent in a hard-fought three-set contest.
On the other hand, the World Number 27 Jayaram played to his maximum potential in the opening set and won it. However, he could not maintain his upper hand in the following both sets and eventually lost the fight in three games.
In the first set, both men showed their impressive craft by playing to their maximum speed and kept the tempo of the game quite fast. They took advantage of every opportunity and remained close in the first half.
Wan Ho was playing with wonderful variations while the Indian was flawless in his powerful drives. Until the break, both shuttlers remained quite close on the board.
After the break, the score continued without giving a comfortable lead to anyone and reached into the concluding points.
However, Wan Ho could not play positive badminton at this crucial stage and lost the set with a margin of 19-21.
In the second set, Wan Ho played on a different level as he controlled the driving seat and managed to create pressure on his opponent. He was far ahead of Jayaram until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Jayaram tried to play fast badminton but failed to dominate the pace and also could not cope up with the power play of his Korean opponent. Wan Ho remained on track and won the set with a 21-12 score on the board.
In the deciding game, Wan Ho continued his incredible play without slowing down his speed at any stage and managed an impressive gap until the interval.
After the break, the higher ranked Korea continued his roller-coaster play and easily ended the final set with a striking margin of 21-10.
Wan Ho emerged as the winner of this three-set contest against Jayaram with an impressive 19-21, 21-12 and 21-10 score on the board.
