Shon Wan Ho stuns Lee Chong Wei to bag Men’s Singles title at India Open Super Series 2012
Korea’s in-form shuttler Shon Wan Ho surprised everyone when bagged Men’s Singles title after stunning the top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the final of India Open Super Series 2012 at New Delhi, India, on Sunday, April 29.
The un-seeded Wan Ho, who is currently World Number 17 in Men’s Singles category, put on a tremendous show of top quality badminton and defeated the defending champion and World Number 1 Chong Wei.
The Korean remained impressive throughout the tournament and continued his gutsy performance in the final as well and got the prize in the form of Men’s Singles crown which is his first achievement in any Super Series tournament.
On the other hand, Chong Wei could not play dominating badminton and also failed to play positively against his lower ranked Korea opponent and lost the match without creating a strong impact.
Chong was also having the support of the India crowd but failed to live up to expectations and lost the contest with a narrow margin.
In the opening set, both shuttlers played well in opening rallies. Chong Wei was relaxed and composed as he did not show any sign of urgency even when he was trailing behind his opponent until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Wan Ho became quicker and remained in complete control of rallies. He played superb badminton as he had nothing to lose while playing against the best shuttler in the world.
The Korean played without taking any pressure and took the first game with a 21-18 score on the board.
In the second set, both shuttlers again played fast and positive badminton and remained close in the opening half.
After the mid-game interval, Chong Wei showed his brilliance and took over the control from Wan Ho, who failed to put up strong show in this game and lost it with a 14-21 margin on the board.
In the deciding set, both shuttlers played tremendous badminton in opening rallies and remained close until the mid-game break.
After the break, Wan Ho played remarkable badminton and managed a wonderful lead. However, he failed to maintain it as Chong Wei played well and levelled the score.
At this crucial stage, Wan Ho played remarkable badminton at this crucial stage and forced Chong Wei to commit mistakes. He won the final set with a narrow margin of 21-19.
Wan Ho emerged as title winner in the India Open as he toppled Chong Wei by a breath-taking 21-18, 14-21 and 21-19 margin on the board.
