Shooter Steve Walton wins second gold
Steve Walton bagged his second gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games shooting competition at the CRPF Shooting Range on Thursday.
The Englishman shot 190 to win the men's double trap event. "In the first two rounds I shot 49, then held it together in the last one. In the final, luckily it went my way," said Walton, who partnered with Steven Scott to win the double trap pairs event
on Wednesday.
India's Ronjan Sodhi claimed the silver medal after compatriot Asher Noria and the Isle of Man's Timothy James Kneale missed their first shots in the three-way shoot-off. Kneale went on to win the bronze medal after world junior champion Noria missed his
14th shot. A shoot-off was needed after the three shooters finished the final round with 186 shots each.
Alethea Sedgman topped the women's 50m rifle three position event to give Australia their first shooting gold medal. The 16-year-old schoolgirl fired 676 points to beat Singaporeans Jasmine Ser (672) and Aqilah Sudhir (671).
"I was like 'oh, really? Cool," said Sedgman after learning that she won her country's first gold medal in the New Delhi meet.
Hosts India won the other two gold medals at stake for the day.
Vijay Kumar and Gurpreet Singh ruled the men's 25m rapid-fire pistol pairs event. The duo combined for a Games record 1162 points.
The Indians were actually down by 10 points at one time but regained their composure to post a comfortable victory. Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan and Hafiz Adzha of Malaysia won the silver medal with 1144 points while Bruce Quick and David Chapman of Australia
won the bronze medal with 1125 points.
Gurpreet won his second gold medal of the day when he teamed up with Omkar Singh to win the men's 10m air pistol pairs. They shot 1163 points, way ahead of silver medallists Nick Baxter and Michael Gault (1143) of England. Singapore's Gai Bin and Lim Swee
Hon took the bronze medal with 1139 points.
"Never in my life had I competed in two events in one day," Gurpreet said.
"Here, I was apprehensive about the schedule, but finally managed to win both the gold medals. Tomorrow (Friday), I will again have to compete in two more events in the individual category,"
Five gold medals will be up for grabs today in the men's and women's trap pairs, men's 25m rapid-fire pistol singles, men's 10m air pistol singles and men's 50m rifle three position pairs.
