my dad is a lefty and has a left handed browning .338 he hates shooting it because it kicks really hard but he needs to sight it in before deer and elk season, so i said i would sight it in for him because i am better with a rifle than him, but i am a righty. will me being a righty mess up the zero when he is shooting?

  1. Tell him to trade it for a Ruger hawkeye 300 mag. My dad has one and it actually kicks less than my M77 270. I dont know if its the stock design or what but its really not bad to shoot at all.

  2. i dint think i would be to bad of an idea but the bore sights are simple and eassy to use and your dad wouldnt have to worry about kick.

  3. You being a righty will not effect point of impact from point of aim.  One shooter flinching or jerking will effect point of impact.  Get a limbsaver recoil pad for it to lessen the felt recoil.

If someone "hates" shooting it during target practice, then they will likely flinch when shooting at an animal and have a higher chance of missing the animal the longer distances that you shoot.   This is exactly the reason that large Magnum calibers are not recommended unless you absolutely need it.  You do not need a .338 Magnum for Elk, it is overkill for deer and it definitely has significantly greater recoil than a .30-06, 7mm Mag or even a .300 Win Mag.

  4. With a scope you can get him very  close.

If the rifle has a  cheek piece for a lefty, he  might have to  fine tweak it himself  w/ a couple of rounds since his eye/ scope position will be a little different

    Best regards

  5. No, and you're in for a pleasant bit of education. When shooting from the bench, there are actually advantages to having the bolt on the wrong side. The only problem is going to be whether you'll have a good cheek-weld, which might be a little unpleasant in a hard kicker like 338 WM.

  6. I don't think it will... I am a lefty but I use a right handed gun. I actually went antelope hunting this weekend and I got one dead on at 300 yards with my 30-06 and my dad, being right handed,  was the one who sighted it in for me. I think he'll be fine! Good luck!! I'm going elk hunting with my brother in November. I don't know about where you live but here in Nevada, it is really hard to get an elk tag. Once you get one, you can't even put in for another for 10 years.

  7. more than likely.  the best person to sight a gun is the person who will be shooting it
