  1. I think for one thing you need to be realistic about things. Don't play people you don't have a chance against and don't play in big time tournaments. Play people you can beat for sure and learn from those experiences. Next thing you need to think about you are not always going to win so be prepared to lose sometimes. Just use a loss as motivation to get better. As for pool stick. I have a Mcdermott and love it. Viking is also a good cue. If they are too expensive than try a players or a viper

  2. Most tournaments are held in bars and you have to be legal drinking age to participate.  If you just somehow managed to get into one you are also risking losing whatever money you do have since the other people likely have far more experience playing pool than you do at this point.  You may want to consider offering to cut lawns, run errands, etc. for neighbours in return for cash.

  3. The only ways to actually make enough money to call it a career is to become a pro or gamble.  Going pro requires a lot of initial investment on your part unless you have serious sponsors to pay for travel and entry.  There is a lot to the playing for money.  Mostly the making money would require traveling aka a road player.  Either way being 14 is going to be a set back, because I'm pretty sure you can't play as a pro if you are under 18-21.  Also you can't exactly drive or get into bars or most pool halls.  Your best be is to keep practicing, look for junior tourneys, get your name out there for the future, and get a paper route or something.  Good luck!

  4. This might help i'm 17 and my parents used to always take me, my brother and sister into this bar that was down the street. They have tourtments all the time and I get to play. So get you parents to take you around to place and find one that might just let you play and then get to know some people. Then usually they will have a paper hanging up for a pool tourtment. Ask someone if you your allowed to join and if so sign up.

    Hope This Helped.

  5. You need to worry about improving your game first, If it improves enough the money will follow

  6. Michael, your ambition and commitment to taking care of your family is admirable, more so than any 14 year old I know of.

I love to play pool and would seldom discourage ANYONE from picking up a cue but you are such an instance. Pool is a hobby for most people and anyone that hustles or gambles at is earns a meager living at best. They lose far more than they win and that doesn't necessarily relate to money. Becoming a pro will take years of playing and practice and sacrifice beyond words. And you need to help your family NOW, not years later.

Your age is something of a detriment but I would council you to find some kind of conventional job and work to earn your money. You might start by finding a pool room near you and ask the owner or manager if there's anything at all you can do around the place to earn some money to support your family. You'll still get to be around the game and will make some great contacts to find more work.

The players in there won't forget who you are and what brought you there either. A day will come when they'll teach you how to play and show you what the game is all about. And it has little to do with money.
