My whole life for as long as i can remember about every second or third time outside at night (without actully trying to see one) I see shooting stars. I have always lived in or just outside of large towns where light does block out alot but I still see them alot. By alot let me clarify i have been outside at night 8 nights this month 5 of those nights i have seen shooting stars and the number of shooting stars is around 15 all together (more then one per night) it has been this frequent my whole life. First is this common and secondly are there any myths or meanings behind seeing that many?

  1. no,it`s just space dust ,,junk or small meteorites burning up in earthe atmosphere

  2. I don't see them that often, but I do see them pretty frequently since I got back into looking at the night sky again.

    My best shooting star annecdote:

I was showing stars and stuff to a friend, and he asked me if I'd ever seen a shooting star. Right then, a really big bright one streaks across the sky behind him. I said "Yep, and I just saw one right now over there!" It took about 5 minutes to convince him I wasn't joking.

  3. Not a myth - a misnomer. Shooting stars look like stars because they are points of light like stars. They're called shooting because they move across the sky with the real (and seemingly stationary) stars behind them.

As far a meanings, well, that's just historical conjecture. Science does little to provide meaning behind phenomena other than the description of functions.

The darker the sky, the more shooting stars you will see. Consider yourself lucky to be able to see as many as you do. Light pollution in major cities prevents many people from enjoying them. Also, you may have a good eye for them :-)

The best shooting star I ever saw was actually a small meteor over rural Texas. It started out as a large trail of light and broke apart into two objects as it descended.

  4. There are meteor showers nearly every night of the year.  Coming up, in the days around August 12, the Perseid shower is one of the best.

I don't see them from home much, the light pollution here is terrible.

It always makes you feel lucky to see something unusual or rare.  But for meteors, all you have to do is look, and be patient.

  5. Make a wish when u see one.
