ShopRite LPGA Classic: Azahara Munoz fails to continue her winning streak, but plays well
Spanish Azahara Munoz, who grabbed a victory at the Sybase Match Play Championship 2012, came close to recording another win at the ShopRite LPGA Classic after she displayed near-flawless performances in the
three rounds.
Munoz finished tied for the third spot as she posted an overall 206.
She said in her interview that she was brimming with confidence when she confirmed her participation for the ShopRite LPGA Classic, as her triumph at the Sybase Match Play Championship was enough to keep her
motivated.
The Spanish star got off to an impressive start at the tournament, held at Seaview Resort Course, Galloway New Jersey. She made calculated strokes in all the three rounds.
Although pumped up, Munoz knew that field would not be easy, as it featured big names like the current world number one Yani Tseng, Suzann Pettersen, Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson and other LPGA (Ladies Professional
Golf Association) giants.
Despite the fearsome field, the Spanish golfer kicked off the opening round with plenty of confidence, as she posted a 69. However, her best performance was seen in the second round, as she registered a 68.
She shot three birdies on the second day and avoided making any bogey. Analysts said that playing a flawless round troubled other contenders, but the 24-year-old made a few mistakes in the first round.
The third round went good, with two birdies and no bogey.
Golf commentators said that the player was firm to do her best once again, but her lack of experience offset her flawless performance in the last two rounds.
They added that another factor that may have caused Munoz to settle for the third spot despite playing so well, was high expectations from her fans.
Speaking to media at the end of the second round, the Match Play winner said that her recent victory really helped her stay focused on her goals.
“It's amazing.  You know, because you are waiting for that moment for so long, so finally when it happens, I didn't even know how to feel, but you know, now it kind of hit me and I'm just really, I mean proud
of myself.  I'm really happy that I got that first win,” Munoz said.
