First off, I'm on a tight budget. I only have $530 to spend overall, but I highly prefer not to spend all that money since I've been saving it for awhile (yes, i know, to get a good camera you have to be willing to spend the money but i'm a beginner photographer afterall...) So what would you recommend? I'm racking my brains out because I don't know too much of what to look for. I've been to Amazon.com and saw alot of good (from my perspective), cheap SLRs but I don't know if they're really any good...so please help! thanks.

  1. I would reccomend the Nikon d40x for that money. Get an all-purpose lens (35-175) and maybe sb-500 flash if you can too. Amazon.com usually has good deals on these.

If you then make some more money and want to upgrade the body (lets say to buy a Nikon d80), you can use those lenses on your new camera body.

Nikon vs Canon is purely a choice. Personally, I prefer Nikon. They seem to be making a comeback.

  2. The Nikon D40 can't use all the Nikon range of lenses, and it is missing a lot of functionality, for instance bracketing.

Wide range zooms are the worst for image quality. All lens designs have compromises, large range zooms have the most compromises in their design than any other type of lens.

If your on a budget consider second hand, and buy used prime lenses great image quality, more difficult to use, but much cheaper.

Pentax cameras have all the functions, have image stabilization built into the camera so every lens (even 40 year old primes) are image stabilized. A massive range of cheap second hand primes with some of the best optics ever designed ALL of which can be used on their DSLR bodies. The list goes on.

  4. At that rage, I'd probably suggest a use Canon XT. You might even be able to get a couple crappy lenses with it to start you off.
