Question:

Shopping for insurance?

I'm probably about to get slapped in the face by a reckless driving ticket pretty soon, and have been looking into insurance. Currently I'm with State Farm, and I don't think they have very good prices. Are there any insurance companies that give good discounts to college students or the military?

What exactly is "collision coverage and deductibles," and what does it include? Why is the premium cost more expensive than the coverage amount, and why would I pay over a thousand dollars for $500 of coverage in this area.

Any knowledge will be appreciated.

  1. Try USAA. They usually give a discount to Military and they have pretty good rates as well.  You will always have a higher premium if you are young and have tickets or accidents in your record for the past three years.  Also, your credit factors in to your rates.  The better your credit, the lower the premium.

Collision coverage covers your car if you get into an At-Fault accident.  If the accident was not your fault or you know you are a safe driver, you may not need it.  One suggestion is if your car is 10 years or older, take Collision coverage off since an At-Fault accident will usually always "Total" your car and it doesn't make sense to pay for that coverage every month if you'll end up paying for the value of your car in a year or two.

I have Allstate and they give me accident forgiveness and it only cost $10 more every 6 months.  I think it's worth it since you never know if and when you will get into an accident.

  2. Like most Insurance Companies, Mercury gives a Good Student Discount, but u must be a full time student and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Mercury has steeper requirements than most others, but are consistenly among the lowest in terms of cost for your insurance. Comprehensive and Collision deductibles is the coverage for your car when it gets damaged physically. Comprehensive is everything thats not Collision...i.e. vandalism, theft, fire, that tree that falls on your car mysteriously, etc. Collision is the damage that stems from an auto accident. Highly recommended you have both on your car, especially on newer cars. You dont necessarily have to pay $500-$1000 for that coverage...tjhose are "set" amounts of deductibles you would need to pay should your vehicle get damaged. You can go as low as $50 on a deductible for Comp and $100 for Collision, though it may cost a lil more. Try getting quotes for different amounts of deductibles from different companies and see what would work best for you. of course when u get a quote ur gonna want to advise them of ANY violations youve had to get the best possible rate at the time of the quote. Why? cause quotes are usually given with clean driving records and when your driving hisstory is run, it may change based on what is found...hope this helps!
