I don't want to bring my boat and do not want to pay for a charter. Are there any good spots to fish on Madeline island (part of the apostle islands.) from shore or any piers?

Thanks

  1. Bring along some waders and go Big Bay Park (access it through the Town Park rather than Big Bay State Park, unless you want to pay to get to the same bay...Town Park is free to get in)....walk out as far as conditions allow without getting swamped and cast.  If the wind is blowing offshore, the warmer (relatively)water will be pushing toward Ashland and bringing cooler water in, giving you a better chance at hookin' up.  The water is always pretty chilly, you won't last long without waders.

There used to be a big sand bar about 200 yards off shore that ran along the entire bay...it came up out of about 4 feet of water and topped out at about 2 1/2 feet,  you could stand on it and cast into deeper water...conditions/sand bars shift and change of course, but go watch the swimmers some afternoon and see if they are out on that bar...then you know if it's there and how far out it is before you keep walking out deeper and deeper.  Go early morning before the winds pick up and it gets busy....BE CAREFUL!!!  Lake Superior "never gives up her dead"...the water is dangerously cold!!!

Use your Krocs, Champs, Devils, etc. just like you would if you were trolling.

P.S.  Make sure you go get a beer at Tom's Burned Down Cafe (if you are 21, of course)

  2. Im not farmiliar with the area.  I would try to call a local contact for the island, Maybe DNR?  Or you can always hit the local fishing tackle store, they should know some good spots.

  3. Just p**p yourself a pier and fish.
