What is the difference? I've heard it's just whether or not the block has heads on it or not? I know this is probably a dumb question, so let me have it!

  1. it,s the difference in the size of the blocks.

  2. A "short block" is an engine without heads, water pump, intake manifold, and other various parts.  These parts are usually used from the old engine.  A "long block" is a complete engine (for the most part).  Also, a long block is more expensive than a short block, due to the fact all the "extra" parts are all new or re-manned.

  3. If you are replacing an engine, get a long block. This includes the cylinder heads. The heads are machined to match the block. If you get  a short block and reuse your old heads, they will have to be machined to match the short block.

  4. yes a long block has more parts with it
