Short Ram Intake On Protege?

I want to install a short ram intake on my 01 Mazda Protege with 5-Speed and 2.0 engine. I want to know is it street legal? and will it affect my performance in any way and will i have any problems when i take my car to smog check? thank you..please give all opinions thought on if i should install it or not, what brand intake etc....also are the unversal ones at autozone decent?

YES IT IS OK TO USE. AND YES IT MAKES A DIFFRENCE ON PERFORMANE AND MPG. AND DONT MATTER WERE YOU BY IT THEY ALL DO THE SAME THING.... GIVE YOU MORE AIR!
