Short Sight?

I just went for an eye test and was given a prescription for short sight. LE -2.5 RE -2.25 Slight Astigmatism -0.25. The optician told me to wear them full time but I hate wearing glasses and also dont like contact lenses. Can I just wear them for driving and watching TV where I really need to. Can I just wear them where I really need to. If I dont wear them I can see stuff but not very clear especially the sign boards. Any one with similar prescription to mine with suitable suggestions....

  1. You must wear them to drive legally.

If you don't wear your glasses you will get wrinkles and furrows from squinting to see clearly,a pair of fashionable funky frames will look much better.

  2. I too am short sighted and i find it impossible to get around with my glasses, however everyone is different. As it is you have to wear your glasses to drive legally and you will find everyday life a lot easier if you wear your glasses.

As you don't like wearing your glasses i would suggest a very bold frame (modern) or the opposite. Go for a rimless pair in which they are very discrete.

  3. It is your choice when to wear your glasses and when not wear them.  If this is your first prescription, you should wear them full time for a few days until your eyes and brain becomes accustomed to the prescription.  What you do after that is up to you.  Your prescription is considered to be a mild prescription.

I know many people with similar prescriptions to yours who only wear their glasses when they need to e.g. driving, movies, or anything where good distance vision is required.  They do not typically wear them for near work -e.g. using computer, reading a book, or sewing.

I also also know people who choose to wear them at all times as well.  You have to go with what you are comfortable with.

My prescription is lower than yours.  LE PL -1.50 X50 RE no correction/plano.  I usually wear a contact lens in my left eye when I go out and wear my glasses at home as needed.  I usually wear them when I watch TV or play video games on the TV.

I can technically see distance objects with my right eye, but my brain will try to combine a blurry image with a clear one when viewing distance objects and I will get a nasty headache if I do it too long.

  4. It's your choice- if you don't want to wear them for the non-essentials, that is totally fine.

I have slightly worse eyes, and I don't mind wearing contacts. However some days I just don't want to, so I  just take my glasses everywhere I go, and if I need to see something far away, just put them on..

It's a myth that wearing/not wearing glasses/lenses will make your eyes better or worse- just wear them whenever you like, but definitely for driving!
