  1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trinity_Sit...

Star at the site of the first atomic test: follow blue links for more information.

In a nutshell short term effects are devastating (see Nagasaki, Hiroshima) and long term effects are minimal (both cities are thriving centres). You can even visit the Trinity site and stand right where it exploded.

  2. many effects.  Short term effects from exposure to radiation generally involve burns.  Long term involves failure of organs due to the death of cells, and changes to the genetic makeup of cells from the energy impact on the dna (mutation).  Those are the dominant problems with radiation.

Nuclear explosion also spreads a lot of poisonous compounds and radioactive compounds that are taken up by the body.  Ill health and death can result from poisoning, or from incorporation of radioactive elements that decay inside the body and basically burn the c**p out of you from the inside out.

A lot more to it than that, but those are the scariest effects.

  3. Initial explosion:

    a) Electromagnetic Pulse, scrambling electronic devices.

    b) Bright light, blinding to those close.

    c) Burst of Gamma radiation.

    d) Vaporisation of material at center of explosion

    During Explosion:

    a) Shock wave

    b) Minor Earthquake (depending on height of bomb)

    c) Dust cloud

    Immediately after explosion:

a)Dust cloud fallout down wind of explosion as dust settles, contamination of land, water, air, and food with radioactive particles

    b) Crater formed (depending on height of explosion)

    Years after explosion:

    a) Radioactive particles taken up by plants and animals

    b) Increased resistance to radiation occuring in plants and animals.

    c) Depending on contamination, tumors found in some effected animals.

    Further years later:

    a) Radiation spread through environment to a point where its effects are not noticed,

    b) Animal and Plant resistance drops back to normal

    c) Tumor occurance returns to normal
