  1. If you already know the basics and bought the right board for your weight and break, just practice.

  2. First I would recommend getting into shape because surfing uses very specific muscles you may not be using now.

You need to do push-ups and bench presses to build your chest muscles, (pecs), so you can push yourself up to stand.

Next you need to do pull-ups or lat pull-downs to work the muscles along your sides, (lats), that you will use to paddle.

A little running will build your cardio and legs muscles.

Then I would take a couple of lessons to get the basics down.

After that it's just going to take time in the water.

I always recommend that beginners get a longboard, (at least 9' long), as these are the easiest to catch waves with and balance on to stand up.

And finally this site has a great article called 'Learn How to Surf in One Day' that I think is terrific:

Good luck and have fun!!  :-)

  3. well, if you know the basics that's the hardest part done with, just stick with it and paddle out as often as there are waves.. don't get discouraged when you see other surfers do tricks and maneuvers, you will get there in time. oh and also don't buy your next board at a yard-sale please!

  4. When you stand on your board be sure to stand sort 3/4 of the way back in the middle when the wave is coming either get on your board and paddle while it comes on push the  board off on the wave when it reachs the boards tail remeber to be confident you do not have to go deep at first once you are more confident it will come natruly altough you want to teach yourself i would recomend a lesson to teach you the basics but its up to you

  5. bring that shortboard into a surf shop and trade it out for a longboard

shortboards bring so much frustration to people learning to surf

i have been surfing longboards for 4 years and i still struggle to balance on a short board

where are you surfing at anyway, that would help

  6. i taught myself how to surf with a shortboard and it took a bit longer than learning on a longboard or funboard. you probably will get frustrated but my best advice for you is to keep practicing, dont give up, and do a lot of pushups/ pull ups.

  7. Okay, so let's just say you really do know the basics, why are you asking us questions like this on line? How about your friends who surf, who will really be in the water with you?

I worry that you might be just one more dangerous person in the water. But, perhaps I am wrong. So you want tips, go to a beach where either nobody else is surfing, or the only other people surfing are your buddies. And spend hour after hour working on those 'basics; that you already know.

Now, if that gets frustrating, or you get somebody angry at you, think about lessons, either formal, or informal from a friend. It can't hurt.

What you propose is not impossible. My son sold a short board to a friend of mine's son, who taught himself to ride very well, in one summer. So, good luck!

  8. Just practice hard and if you can buy a longboard because it will be easier to learn on.
