Short memory is the secret of Milwaukee Brewers' John Axford's success – MLB Playoffs
The Milwaukee Brewers closer John Axford has displayed a wonderful performance this season. His secret, according to the player, is ‘a short memory.’ He has so far had 46 wins to his credit.
The Brewers will rely heavily on their closer John Axford provided the offence does something extraordinary on Wednesday’s Game 4 against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Having won the first two games 4-1 and 9-4, the Brewers failed on both defence and offence
in their last game with a 8-1 defeat.
However, in their victories so far, the Brewers have Axford as one of the most helpful and contributory players. Axford, having a disarmingly humble mien, believes it is a short memory that helps him achieve his goals.
"A short memory," he said. "That's the biggest thing I've picked up recently. It was really tough in college when you had a week to wait between starts. In the Minor Leagues, I was a starter and I was also relieving at times in-between.”
In the final 30 appearances that Axford has had in the regular season, he maintained a remarkable 0.59 ERA, putting up unsurpassable barriers for almost every team out there. The big figure of 46 saves serves as infallible evidence of his superiority.
In a total of 74 games in the regular season, the 6ft 5in closer has pitched 73.2 innings, giving up only 59 hits, allowing merely 19 runs with 1.95 ERA. The fact that he has only given up four home-runs all this while shows he has remained extremely effective
and difficult to handle for the hitters.
He has learned his lessons from the little mistakes he might have committed when he made his start. Axford said, “I think I learned very quickly that the best possible scenario is to forget what just happened, forget about the previous batter, the previous
pitch.”
With the Milwaukee Brewers battling the Arizona Diamondbacks, it is a challenge for their closer Axford to execute with perfection the upcoming uphill task. Game 4 could prove to be the series-decider, if that does not happen, Axford has to do it in the
final game on Friday.
