Short-term car insurance in the US?

In the following year I'm going to have several visitors coming for just a few days and I want them to be able to use my car. I'd like to know if there are companies that offer short-term car insurance.

  1. Your guests will be covered with your auto insurance policy, with all the risks that that entails (they get into an accident, you could be the one sued, and your rate may go up).  Unfortunately, that is just how things are done here.

No insurance company will let your guests buy their own insurance for just a few days.  Auto insurance policies in the US are for terms of 6 months.  Even if it were possible, it still would be worthless.  In many states, such as Florida, by law, if you lend your car, you also lend them your insurance.

  2. Most insurance in force for the owner of the auto, will allow you to let others use your auto without loss of coverage, however, if someone has an accident using your car, you are liable.  This could cause an increase in your rates if they had an accident.

  3. Contact your insurance company and ask them if you can temporarily add visitors to your policy or if your policy will cover anything that happens while they are driving it.

  4. State Farm used to have an affordable 'Non Owners' insurance policy solution. Check to see if they still offer it.

  5. No, but if it's only several days or a week per person, check with your insurer - they could probably drive without even being listed, as long as they have a valid license recognized in the US (foreign license in English, or international license).

  6. sorry i live in Canada

  7. Most Standard or Preferred insurance companies will provide coverage to anyone you give permission to drive the car, with a few exceptions.

    1. They must not live in the household and/or regularly drive the car. If so, they need to be named on the policy.

    2. They must have a valid driver's license.

    3. The driver must not be using the car for business purposes.

As long as they meet the above, they should have coverage. Check with your insurance agent to make sure you are with a preferred or standard company.
