Which are you favourite cattle? Do you like a long horn? They can be a bit more difficult to handle, but more rewarding so I've heard.

  1. i have never messed with long horn cattle as in the breed longhorn all of our cattle were either polled or we woud dehorn them as calves both for our safety and the safety of the other animals in the herd  all horns are good for in my opion is to look at

  2. I think longhorns are "prettier".. I think they are  a much better breed than a shorthorn.  I only like shorthorn hides, their color is beautiful. Longhorns hides are beautiful too. Their horns are a pain to deal w/  with ranchers. They are not mean. They are disease resistant and easy calving, and good milkers.... Shorthorns are none of these things!

  3. its not the length of the horns that matters, its the quality of the meat.

  4. Short horn.  They are cuter and they can't stab you with their horn =P

  5. Pure bred Texas Longhorn hands down.Small birth weights, high level of disease resistance, great maternal instincts, lean meat, minimal handling required.

  6. I am majoring in Ag. and I rodeo. My favorite are the long horns far as rodeoing and just in general. But if they are being raised for consumer purposes I prefer no horns. There are a lot of dangers involved in having the long horns, such as getting horned yourself, they can easily get hurt while in pens especially shoots due to their horns getting caught in the panels, and they can get in the way during breeding again because of getting caught on something. But really its your own personal opinion.

  7. Polled are the best for many reasons, actually.

  8. Long horns are used a lot for team ropning bulldogging. They are kept by people who like the old way. You sort of turn them out and forget about them. They are very motherly and some are hard to handle. Shorthorns mostly a beef breed that fallen in populaty in  the last several years. They tend to be docile. Both breeds can have long horns if not dehorned.

  9. Aesthetic appeal - longhorns, hands down. However, from personal experience especially with pedigreed stock long horned cattle injure one another .. an expensive exercise.

  10. I would think shorthorn  the longhorn wouldn't you think all that attention going to the horns would take away something from the meat

  11. The type of cattle we have are Sime-Angus.  When we casterate calves and work the cattle, we also clip the horns if needed.  I personally don't like cattle with horns.  Also it seems that when you do sell cattle, the main color they like is black.  To answer your question, I like shorthorn cattle.

  12. Longhorns are more for rodeos.  They make relatively poor beef cattle.  The horns make them more difficultt to handle and transport.  They aren't as picky as most cows about what they eat.  Where I live they're about half the cost of most mixed breeds.

Polled, or hornless are preferred by most farmers and ranchers.  Black angus have the best reputation for meat quality.  Red Angus can better tolerate hot summers. Charlaits are a larger breed from France.  Brahmas best withstand heat--they're from india.

I prefer polled mixed breeds as its easier to identify individual cows and require a lower initial investment.

  13. I think most Texans would have to say...Longhorn!

  14. Milking shorthorn.  You can cross breed them without too much in the way of damages and you get milk and meat in one cow.

  15. Well, I've never had longhorn, but Black Angus or Brangus either one is my favorite cattle. It really depends on where u live... Here's a good website to go to... www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/cattle

  16. long horn
