  1. Only if you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

  2.   Well In my state of MA you don't need a conceal carry permit to transport long guns or shotguns. You do need a Class B which is basically a gun permit for every gun except Hand Guns and guns that hold no more than 10 rounds.

The law here is for transporting them they must be in a locked case (the trunk does count as a locked case) or fixed with a state approved locking mechanism (trigger lock, cable lock). I would just throw a trigger lock on it to be safe. You can always have the one cop that thinks they know the rules and could take your gun for improperly transporting a firearm. Cops are no different than anyone else. Some of them don't know the laws so they just assume. If this happends to you sue them and don't back down. I paid off my brand new van for having a gun illegaly taken from me by a young cop. Compliments of a small town police department. I sued them for $30,000 and got $21,000. How's that for violating my rights.

  3. In most States, it is legal to have an unloaded shotgun in your trunk -- even in California.  Having the safety on or off is irrelevant to almost all State law.  There is no need to have a permit or license to conceal.  However, the State of Illinois, Massachusetts and Hawaii have severely restrictive gun laws and it most definitely is not ok unless the gun is disassembled, in a locked container, and a you have a valid permit for possession.

In North Carolina, specifically, you do not need a permit or license to carry an unloaded shotgun in your vehicle -- given you do not have immediate access to it (i.e. in the trunk).  You are also required to notify an officer if you have the firearm.  Do so in a calm manner clearly indicating it is unloaded and locked away in the trunk where you have no access to it.

  4. It ultimately depends on which state you are in as well as jurisdiction. As far as my state, a gun must be unloaded and in a case. You must also have a Firearms Owners Identification card. And if you are in Chicago or one of the suburbs, forget it. Some of the western states, allow you to drive around in a pick-up with guns in the back window in a rack. How good is that? Anyway, check with your state police, or game warden.

  5. Yes.
