i have a 1 year old male dog, my question is when i got him from my friend the only shot he had so far was the rabies vac.

next month I'm scheduling him for a apt with the vet and what I'm wondering is what shots does he need and about how much might it all come to, also because i live in a apartment complex it is required for him to be fixed.

I'm calling a few vets In my area for pricing , but before i do , does anyone know of a site that would tell me all his shots he needs and about how much it might cost for everything.

  1. Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Coronavirus-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus Vaccine, Modified Live and Killed Virus. This is called a 5 in 1 puppy vaccine.  It is given 3 times.  Usually at 6 weeks, then 8-9 weeks and again 11-13 weeks.

Some vets give another vaccine called lepto, in a 5 in 1 (L) vaccine. (it is the same as the other with lepto added).

Another vaccine given is done once and is called Bordatella.  This combats kennel cough.

They are standard vaccines, all vets give them.  They are important because your dog can die if it is exposed to these

  2. By law he only needs a rabies vaccine, but I also would get the "parvo" vaccine and distemper shot. All in all with the visit will probably be close to $100.00, mine usually run around $70.00 for my cats. Call around for best prices on neutering him, it's unbelievable the price differences. You could also check with your local Animal Shelter, they offer rabie shot clinics from time to time and they could recommend a good vet for you.

  3. well ur vet will give ur dog all the shots that he needs and tell him that he has only had his rabies vac. so far

  4. When you go to the vet tell him/her that the dog has only had the rabies shot and ask what other shots he needs and how much it would cost. Since you live in an apartment, go to the front office an ask someone if he has to get fixed or not.

  5. The best thing to obtain for your pet is a:

    Rabies vaccination

    DHLPP vaccination

and if your pet boards, has grooms done or is around other dogs a bordetella vaccination.

The only vaccination I would consider optional would be the bordetella. Read up on Parvo and Distemper. They're not fun to treat and it's expensive if your pet contracts either disease. Most pets with distemper die. $70-100 is reasonable. I'd have him checked for heartworms as well and start heartworm preventative. Proheart is back on the market, it's a twice a year injection that takes care of heartworms and hookworms (which can be transmitted to YOU).
