Question:

Shots for babies/side effects?

my 6 week old went to the doctor today. The doctor gave her 3 shots. Hep B shot, DTap & Hib combined with IPV. Did your newborn get this many shots at once? Do you think the shots should be split up more or just go by what the doctor does? Did your baby's have any side effects from the shots?

  1. my son got all these shots at his 2 month appt plus 1 or 2 I think.  Its normal I guess and the only side effect was a fever.  The doc recommended infant tylenol drops for the fever and he was fine the next day.

  2. Several shots at once is normal. The most common side effect will probably be a low-grade fever. Also, they may be a little sore at the injection site so it is best to baby the area. Some babies will also have a bit of diarrhoea and be a bit fussy. If the symptoms persist for too long though, make sure you phone your doctor.

  3. Huh where I live babies do not get shots before 8 weeks, period.  The doctor was terribly upset I ended up seeing her at 7 weeks, of course then I fired her over other issues (she was pretty bad) wonder why she was having trouble getting enough patients.

You should have been provided with both the CDC Vaccine Information Sheet (VIS) and the leaflet that comes with the actual vaccine.  Which you should have read and understood before they gave the shots so that you know what to look out for.

    You can find VIS here:

    http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/

However for the more detailed information you need to know which manufacturer's vaccine your doctor used.

  4. Thats the normal dose.  She will get them again at 2 months, 4 and 6.  My son had a very mild fever after each but then at his 6 month shots he slept for the better part of 2 days!
