Today my daughter got 4 shots (Hib, PCV, MMR, and varicella (chickenpox). She is 13 months old. Every time she has gotten her shots her temp has never gone over 100ish. Tonight she seemed rather warm so I took her temperature and it was 101.5. I gave her Motrin about 45 minutes ago and will take her temperature in a few minutes.

But, should I call her Dr now? Or wait it out a little longer? Does that seem rather high or normal?

  1. Next time she gets shots give her some medicine before she gets them. If you are worried call your doctor that is what they are for.

  2. I would call your doctor right away, as this could be a side effect to the shots.  My daughter got a fever after her 18 month shots.  After taking Motrin, the fever went away and she was fine, but it never hurts to be cautious and call the doctor.  101.5 is not too high; however, if the fever rises rapidly, there is more cause for concern.  In addition to Motrin, put cold compresses on her forehead and make sure you don't wrap her in blankets (just put a light sheet on her when she is sleeping).   Take care, I know it is scary when little ones get fevers, but it is normal and she will get through it.

  3. It is fine. A tempature of under 102 is not that bad. ( Unless there are other more pressing symptoms occuring too!) I would wait and call the doctor only if it goes over 102. You know that it is most likely a reaction to the shots so at least you have the reason. My daughter who is 13 months as well ( they really should have a play date!) had a fever over the weekend of 103.9 and the doctor just told me to give her Ibuprofen...I was sorta annoyed but it went down and all was well.

    * Here is a piece of advice for shots....an hour before the scheduled appointment for shots give your little girl a dose of Motrin. It helps prevent the fever and helps with the immediate pain of the shots. Good luck!

  4. Wait and see how the Motrin worked.  I remember that round of shots being hard on my daughter too.  Sheactually broke out in a measles-like rash about 10-12 days after the MMR vaccine.  I took her into the doctor and they reassured me that this was a common reaction, and that it meant her body was accepting the vaccine and building immunity to it.

  5. Same thing happened to me with my first son...being a new mom, I rushed him to the emergency room.  But, as long as her tempature is going down, she should be fine...it's totally normal for a baby to get a fever after her shots.  But I would call your doctor...just in case!!!  Your insurance might have an on-call nurse who you can speak to...

  6. yes call the doctor, she he may give you another method of dealing with the temp. doesnt seem higher but if it gets any higher you should take her into the doctor and continue the motrin until tomorrow.

  7. It's totally normal for kids to get a fever after getting their shots- it's their body fighting the shot and building it's immune system.  If her temp is still 102 and higher AFTER motrin I would call your doc
