Should AS Roma give the Captain’s armband to Daniele De Rossi? (Part 2)
The forward has lost a yard off his pace and his recurring injuries are also a source of concern. The childish tantrums the skipper has been thrashing off late only bring a bad name to the Roman club. Lazio legend Di Canio recently blasted the Roman and
labelled him a selfish disgrace. In light of his recent antics, such accusations are wholly justified.
Enter Daniele De Rossi, the future captain and the heart and soul of the current Roma squad. Just like Totti, Il Capitano Futuro is Roma through and through. The midfield general debuted for his home town club at the age of 18 and by the time he had turned
20, he was already a first team player. Over the years, De Rossi has established himself as one of the most complete midfielders in the game today. Scouts from European giants have been hovering over the player, patiently waiting for De Rossi to want a move
away. Such an incident is unlikely to happen. Clubs like Chelsea and Real Madrid have tried to lure the player away in the past but to no avail. Real Madrid in particular has made no secret of their desire to take the Roman to Santiago Bernabeu. De Rossi for
his part always voices his fierce loyalty to the Roman cause, and his desire to finish his career in the Roman jersey.
De Rossi has made 30 plus league appearances in his last six seasons, Totti on the other hand has been unable to do so since his Capocannoniere winning season of 2007. At the age of 27, De Rossi is on the peak of his abilities and has a lot to offer to his
side than a depleted Totti. Daniele wears his heart on his sleeves and gives in his maximum for the club that he adores. With the Captain’s armband on his arm, De Rossi will only play better.
Francesco Totti is still a world class player, no doubt about that. But he doesn’t have the legs to play the entire 90 minutes week in and week out. With the burden of captaincy off his shoulders, Er Pupone will play with a clean head. More importantly,
if Totti hands over the armband to his friend, the Gilarossi faithful will adore him even more for they know De Rossi has earned the right to lead over the years of devoted service.
AS Roma has made a terrible start to this season; the Scudetto hopefuls currently languish 18th in the league. On current form, they won’t even finish for a European spot let alone a Serie A title. Under such circumstances, De Rossi just might
consider a move away from the club. However, if De Rossi is appointed the captain, Roma will have the added insurance of keeping the best Serie A midfielder at the Trigoria.
