Table tennis is a serious competitive sport in parts of the world, including China, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, France, Germany, and Sweden.  It is mostly played only for recreational purposes in the U.S., but it's the most popular sport in China, which happens to be the host country this time around.

Air hockey really isn't played competitively.  In the U.S., the differences between the two in terms of competitiveness and seriousness isn't apparent, but it's very apparent in a lot of other countries.
