Question:

Should Anti-Social Behaviour Orders be scrapped?

ASBOs address the symptom, not the condition. But, something meaningful has to exist to punish actions that don’t merit criminal punishment, but damage the quality of life of others, especially through constant repetition. ASBOs are explicitly intended to deal with bad juvenile behaviour. What do you think? I would like to hear some opinions on this. Thanks.

  1. Try not to cofuse anti-social behavior with criminal behavior. Your anti social behavior may manifest in some harmless way like not speaking in public or even in your personal appearance. Many such indiviuals seek the disappeoval of the public and there by punish themselves, but if their needs are not satisfied, they can become a greater threat to the public and then criminal. Each should be addressed on a case by case basis.

  2. I think that the ASBO's are not an actual real punishment.

Punishments for young law breakers is difficult, yet i beleive that there are some effective methods that can be taken.

    For theft / Vandalism

    1. Cleaning / Litter picking

( No matter what crime or who they are or age, this must be a punishment )

For Attacking others / For disrespecting other people

    2. Volentary work in areas like, Shops / Charity places / Hospitals

So they can build skills with other people more.

Punishments where they go to a government building get branded with a peice of paper and then sent back to the areas where they get into trouble does nothign to deter the person from reoffending...

This is just my opinion however.

  3. I read some unusual orders for an ASBO were such as not playing football in the street, not being allowed to use the word 'grass' to insult people in public, just weird things..I see these Orders as being niches, or little orders to limit somebody in some way. But I can see where these could be useful against people who like to graffiti, or in other ways vandalize property, you could order them to not to bring graffiti in that selected area, if that is proven you were the one who graffitied said area beyond a doubt

Just my two cents I really had no clue what an ASBO was until you asked that haha thanks though I learned something new today, made my lousy day :D

  4. Asbo's don't work because the badly behaved teens see it as a badge of greatness - they have an asbo so they are really cool and hard.

  5. technically for bad juveniles its considered conduct disorder. I'm actually doing a 4,000 word essay on whether antisocial behavioral disorder is acquired biologically or environmentally. In my opinion it's a mix of both. I think anyone is capable of being diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder but it takes the right kind of experiences for it to show up. If this is the case (I could be wrong) then it wouldn't technically be called a disorder now would it? :) So i think this question has a valid point. It's simply the description of a criminal:

“Antisocial personality disorder is characterized by a lack of regard for the moral or legal standards in the local culture. There is a marked inability to get along with others or abide by societal rules. Individuals with this disorder are sometimes called psychopaths or sociopaths.”

Technicallly I believe it's what we call criminal behavior. "antisocial personality disorder" is simply the label the gave it so they could put it in the DSM-IV
