Should Australia become a republic?

I want to know what the Australian public thinks about this controversial issue.

As an Englishman, I won't be offended, just so long as I am not held personally responsible. Like you people, I have my views: However, as small cogs in the wheel, do we have a real say?

New Zealanders are also invited to submit their views.

  1. yes bye all means then we will all go down the tubes why rock the boat all the sudden

  2. Technically yes, of course we should, the monarchy is an anachronism.

Practically, many people have voted "no" in the past because they despise the pollies we have and don't want them to have even more power.

I can see both points of view. However, as a recent immigrant to the Lucky Country (and oh, I do know how lucky I am!) I shall be voting "YES" next time there is a referendum. The stupidity and arrogance of the royals and the still widespread social snobbery and ridiculous class structure in Britain is part of the reason I left there, after all.

  3. I think that Australians should tell the UK to go take a hike.  The UK is holding Australia back and not doing a thing for it. Happy Independence day Australia; let us know when you are having our own version of the Boston tea party.

  4. I'm not really sure. At the moment we pay taxes to the queen when the money could stay in our country, but there is an advantage cos if somethong goes wrong like if therewas a war in Australia then we know that the queen will be there to support us  sending her troups to fight it along side us. I don't know I guess I'm worried hat the prices of food, petrol and eveything else will become a lot more expensive, I mean it already is but what if after that it becomes way over the top.

  5. I say go for it and Canada, too.

  6. Yes-get rid of the inbred parasitic Royal Family . I'm sick of paying for their security everytime they feel like a break from dreary old England.

I feel a personal affront in that Britain has a law that excludes Catholics from being King. People practicing wicca, voodoo, Satanism or some kind of animist tribal religion are OK, but NO CATHOLICS! They hate me, so I'm just returning the favor.

PS I always say three Hail Marys for the repose of the soul of that courageous freedom fighter Guy Fawkes on the anniversay of the (unfortunately failed) Gunpowder Plot.

  7. I think we should become a republic because we are old enough to look after ourselves :-) As a nation we consider ourselves as Australians and not a subsiduary of Britian. I think for all intents and purposes we are a republic in everything but name.
