The alternative is that Belgium would break up into two, or even three regions (Flemish, Walloon, German speaking).

  1. For Sue: before making such urbi et orbi declarations you should document yourself better. You obviously have no idea what they speak in the BELGIAN  cities Eupen, Malmedy and Sankt Vith. You let pass an opportunity to remain silent.

  2. And why not to? United we stand, united we prevail!

  3. and why not ?????Belgium will always be Belgium  small country but has a lot to offer ?and Evan though the 3 regions the people of Belgium speak  4 languages and more Flemish,French,Dutch, German and others great people great place,I am proud to be half Belgian !!!!

  4. LaFeeFan is right - strange question... why should a country effectively lose power by dividing itself.  Belgium is a proud country, and of course there are minorities that would like to "break away" but usually thoses are the ones that haven't actually really considered the financial, social & economic disadvantages in doing that

Many countries have regions within e.g. Spain, Netherlands, Italy, that consider themselves different from the norm and e.g. speak a different language (or version of the country-wide language), so Belgium is not unique in this point

Despite the recent media hype, I don't foresee Belgium dissolving into anarchy and creating multiple sub countries no.

  5. I have just repatriated after 25 years abroad.  All good and well it splitting up into three regions but what would be the difference?  From the little I know the three regions alrady have their own autonomy.  Where does Brussel fit into your equation?

Why was Belgium created?  Parts of Flandres stretch into France, the French even have roadsigns declaring you are entering Flandres somewhere on the motorway between Calais and Brugge.  Many Dutch from Zeeuwsch Vlaanderen consider themselves as 'reserve Belgians'.  Personally I would see myself as a 'reserve Zeeuw'.

If you watch Belgian television you notice they will subtitle all West- and Oost Vlaamse dialects however weak they are.  When the actors speak Brabants or Antwerps dialects they rarely subtitle.

Vlaams is not a recognized language.  The official language is 'Algemeen Nederlands'.  Who are they kidding, I belong to the generation that was forced to speak 'Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands'.  They dropped the 'beschaafd' over the years, it means 'civilized' but it shows the basic notion that in Brussel they really never thought that Vlaams was civilized in the first place.

Flandres with the Netherlands, Wallonie can go to France, the German speakers join Germany and Brussels can sort itself out. (trekt z'n plan maar, as they say here). Make it into a tax paradise mini state ruled by the current royal family.

  6. There is a small minority of German speaking people near the German boarder in Belgium, and German is an official language in Belgium, besides Dutch and France, however that question sounds like a "troll-motivated" one.

Belgium is a country/state of the European Union and should be constituted as being part of it. Otherwise we would have discussions why should Germany stay together since the Bavarian speak other dialects than the North-Rhine Westphalians.

Furthermore it is really interesting, that those questions are mostly asked by persons being the "first time" on YAHOO answer.

  7. I think it should, I like Belgium

  8. Check out our National Motto : UNITED WE STAND

    L'Union fait la Force!

Why should we divide our country? The only people interested in doing so are a very small minority of extremists and some politicians who only see their own & private agenda in doing so. We have fought too long to be a country! Are we going to try to undo what our ancesters have fought soo hard for? No way...we will remain united.

And by the way, for 1 of the answerers,  we do have THREE official languages in Belgium and quite a few families have members all over the country. I know my family has.

    Hope this helps.

  9. Why would that be necessary?  and they don't speak German in Belgium.  At least not to my knowledge.  Just Flemish and French.
