Should Boston Celtics re-sign Kevin Garnett? – NBA Feature
Kevin Garnett’s contract with his current team Boston Celtics is due to expire at the end of 2011-2012 NBA season. He is been playing in the league for sixteen years now. Starting with Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995, he led the
team to eight-consecutive playoff appearances.
In a short time, Kevin established himself as the main player of Timberwolves and single handedly led his team to triumphs over some of the best teams in the league.
In 2007, Kevin’s career took a new turn when he was traded to Boston Celtics. With Kevin in Celtics, experts contemplated the rejuvenation of Celtics in the upcoming season as the team was strengthened heavily by the addition and
was almost nicknamed “The Big Three” by media.
Kevin helped Celtics in winning the 2008 championship by scoring a double-double in the sixth game of NBA final 26 points and 14 rebounds. With the championship title under his name, Kevin had now achieved almost every award in
NBA.
But since the 2008 season, Kevin’s performance has been on a downward spiral majorly due to injuries. He struggled with inconsistency and injuries throughout the 2009-2010 season.
But just when it started looking like this is the end of the great Kevin Garnett and he would be retiring soon, Kevin showed again the passion and determination he held for the game when he bounced back in the 2010-2011 playing
71 matches season games and ending with an average of 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds.
Experts believe this is the last chance for Celtics to win a championship with the current talented core they acquire. The three big players Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Garnett are touching their mid thirty’s now and would probably
be retiring in a year or two. Pierce and Allen still continue to be the dominant force that they used to be.
It is Garnett, who has been a bit offbeat and understandably so, as he has played more matches than Pierce and Allen so his body has encountered considerable amount of wear and tear but despite that, the 6 ft 11 has a big heart
and wants to keep playing.
The General Manager of Celtics, Danny Ainge is in a dilemma whether to extend Garnett’s contract or not. What if his fragile body is not able to hold the pressure and he gets injured in the midway of season and becomes a liability
on team?
Ainge is aiming to achieve much cap space and that’s evident with Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley and Paul Pierce only amongst the players who have been signed beyond the upcoming season.
Celtics have approximately $30 million for 2012-2013 and though that number will certainly go bit high when the team acquires new Rookies from the draft, still that amount is enough and should definitely leave enough financial
resources to make colossal impact in the free agency next season.
But will re-signing Garnett thump those plans? Garnett recently revealed in a television program that he has not been an offered an extension.
Ray Allen’s contract is also expiring soon and that will be giving David Ainge sleepless nights too. Ainge would be under a lot of pressure. Should he extend the contracts of veterans and secure the present or let them go and look
for the future? These type of questions will be going through his head and he has to make a decision soon.
