Should Davis Love III have picked Hunter Mahan over Jim Furyk?
The Ryder Cup is over and Team USA once again lost from a commanding position. Once again, the big guns from Team USA have failed to deliver, especially Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.
Both of them secured just one and a half points from a possible seven. There were already many question marks over Jim Furyk’s selection in the team.
Many pundits had already said that choosing Furyk over Hunter Mahan would prove costly and in the end, it did prove to be that way.
Jim Furyk secured only one out of a possible three points. Most importantly, he lost the crucial match in the singles against Sergio Garcia.
Loosing does not matter but the way he lost it was disappointing. Furyk was in the lead going in to the final two holes. However, he bogeyed both to hand over the lead to Garcia.
Jim Furyk is a veteran now, he has achieved almost everything that a golfer dreams of. On the other hand, Hunter Mahan was young and eager for success.
More importantly, he wanted redemption for his lapse at Celtic Manor – that chip at the 17th which handed the victory over to Europe.
Furyk was winless this season, where as Hunter Mahan was one of the very few players who have won twice on the tour.
In addition to that, his victory at World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship over Rory McIlroy was something really big.
Hunter had the passion and will on his side. Unlike Furyk, he has not had much success in his golfing career.
Mahan has a hunger for success and he was very eager to make it in to the Ryder Cup team so that he could avenge the loss that the Americans suffered at Celtic Manor.
When the captain’s picks were announced, Hunter was devastated. He was so disturbed that he said that he will not even watch the Ryder Cup on the television.
If Hunter had been in place of Jim Furyk, he would have at least won his singles match. His enthusiasm for success and eagerness for redemption were enough for Davis Love III to pick him over his long time friend, Jim Furyk.
