Queen Beatrix used to be said to ride around the Hague on a bicycle.

King Hussein of Jordan, it was claimed, would tour the countryside and camp with bedouins, which added to his popularity.

  1. Closer to the guillotine, if she is not prepared to suffer the taxation the rest of us has to!

  2. I don't think she is distant - just dignified. She has enormous integrity and tremendous energy for someone who should have been retired 20 years ago. She has done her job - which was thrust upon her - with much commitment and zeal beyond the call of duty. Give her a break!

  3. In a world where the terrorists are looking to strike out at any world leader, she doesn't need to be "out among  her people." Few world leaders in the West are.  Even before the "war on terror," the Irish  Republican Army (IRA) would have made her a target had they had the chance with her "out and about among the people."

  4. Presenting herself and her dysfunctional family as holier than thou would help.  Also stopping the extended family and other hangers on from sponging as much as possible from public coffers would also help.

  5. HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... QUEEN ELIZABETH IS MY ANCESTOR!

  6. The day the queen worries about how she's going to pay the heating bills, buy petrol for the car and what to cook for dinner tonight, she may be 'closer to the people'. Do you really think that's gonna happen?

  7. how is she distant - she does 100's of walkabouts every year which is far more them most ladies in their 80's could do.

She has no need to justify her role - she is our queen - end of discussion!

Whatever the royal family does people will complain.

do you expect her to have an open house policy to the millions of people in this country - she just did a TV programme on the telly that gave us more of an insight.  How can she be more accesible

  8. She is the QUEEN and dosen't need to answer to anyone....yet still makes the time to talk to loads of people...plus, she's getting up there in years....she's not at all distant. She is a role model to millions....she's aproductive and busy woman and don't think she's distant at all!

  9. The Queen does an enormous amount, some of it unseen.

She has been tireless in keeping her coronation vow, more than 50 years ago, to do all in her power to support and uphold her people.

Your criticism is ignorant and ... well, out of place.

  10. Her Majety has served the country for over 60 years, always dignified and always marvelous.

As for her, being closer to people... Only today it was revealed that Her Majesty had decided to cancel the celebrations, dedicated to the Diamond Wedding Anniversary. This was done because (quote) "Her Majesty felt it would inappropirate to launch celebrations, in wake of the country's economic woes". (Private opinion - I think it would have been lovely to celebrate such a glorious anniversary!)

In my book, that shows Her Majesty is very much close to us!

  11. She doesn't have to justify herself to me.  She has been a wonderful Queen.  She has maintained her dignity throughout her life, even though her family have sometimes let her down.  I was born just after WW2 and have known of her for all of my life.  She served in the land army during the war and has been an marvellous example of womanhood for all of us.  She has never had the freedom that you or I have had and has been constantly criticised by the younger generations of this country, who really know nothing of her past.
