Question:

Should Floyd Mayweather lose the mythical pound for pound title if he fights De La Hoya and then Hatton?

What's the point in these 2 rematches? Floyd can fight anyone he wants, it's his call. And while fighting Cotto isn't mandatory, shouldn't it be the way he keeps the proverbial P4P title over Pavlik and/or Pacquio?

  1. Very simple. Those are the 2 fights where he can make the most money. The first De La Hoya fight made history in terms of pay per view  buys and tickets sales and Oscar is the biggest draw in boxing right now so because the first fight was close in a lot of peoples eyes the rematch would do even bigger numbers. I'll give you an example, out of my friends their are only

2 big boxing fans, yet over 20 of us got together to watch that fight. When is the last time you and a big group of friends made a big deal over a fight? And they had that 24\7 thing on HBO to hype it up as well. Marketing genius, and they will do it again. And I'm sure we would all watch it again if they had a rematch. Meaning my friends and I.

Now on to Hatton. This fight is supposed to take place in England if they rematch at Wembley stadium. That holds clos t 90,000 people if I'm not mistaken, imagine the ticket cost multiplied by 90,000. And you better believe every seat will be filled knowing how passionate the English fans over Hatton, and I'm sure some of us Americans would go to. Then all the pay per view buys, If you think about it like that it makes perfect sense. Plus believe it or not these fights are good for boxing, you know every boxer mentioned is world class and will fight their heart out. That what boxing has missed for a long time. But ultimately it comes down to money.

  2. Yes......I had to chuckle a little in reading some of the other answers. Of Course...for example...PBF makes more money fighting Hatton than he does Cotto BUT that is not your question...The Fact is, as you indicated, that the ONLY way for PBF to retain his P4P title IS to fight Cotto..........

  3. To me he has lost the p4p ranking as number 1. with him fighting judah(who had just lost to baldomir for christ sakes) then oscar(hasn't been a real contender since 2001) then hatton(not even a welterweight or a real threat to him) i have looked at manny who hasn't ducked anyone and has destroyed anyone in his division. he may not be as technical or as fast but he has the heart of a champion to go and fight and defeat all that threaten his throne. mayweather is using gimmicks now. and if  calzaghe wins against bhop. floyd can definitely kiss being the number 1 fighter in the world and move to number 3 behind joe and manny, guys who are fighting real challengers and not trying to make a quick dollar

  4. This is a very good question elmer (as usual) and I have seen some really good answers as well but i think there are three reasons why mayweather jr. is still the pound for pound king right now and won't fight Cotto:

    1) Money: Mayweather is a business man as well as a boxer, both De La Hoya and Hatton are really HUGE draws and with these fights Mayweather JR stands to make millions and millions of dollars as well as high pay per view ratings and a huge increase in world wide fame, Cotto is the next legitimate contender and he deserves a shot a lot more than Oscar and Hatton but the question is, how much money  can he bring? can he bring in as many people and as much money as hatton and de la hoya? You do the math.....is it better to fight a legitimate contender who might not bring in that much money and might actually have a chance against Floyd, or is it better to fight two really huge draws that you have already beaten before? I think you already know the answer

    2) Overal abilty:The pound for pound title has more to do with overall skill and boxing ability than actual fights, in terms of skill and consistency I would say that Mayweather is still the best out there, Pacman's brawling style won't help him forever Marquez proved that already, and Pavlik is a good fighter but even pavlik is yet to win titles in different weight classes the way Mayweather has, pavlik's division is in bad shape and if he moves up to much he runs the risk of facing calzaghe and i do not think he would win that fight, moreover style wise he relies on power and aggression and is still inferior to Mayweather in terms of overall skill and mayweather still has a better record than either pacquaio or pavlik.

    3) Future: Right now Mayweather feels that he has nothing left to prove and he has been talking about retiring for quite sometime, I think what he is trying to do is just make as much money as possible and secure his future (he is trying to become a top promoter and join de la hoya as one of the richest in the sports) and although a fight between him and cotto would cement his status as a boxing great he is more worried about his cash, however I still believe that sooner or later he is going to agree to that fight, sure mayweather might be a business man,but i know (and i am sure you know this too) that deep down inside mayweather is still a fighter at heart and sooner or later the fighter will overpower the business man in him let us hope it won't be too late by then.

  5. My answer would be yes. I watched both those fights, and contrary to what people might say, he won both of the fights handedly. Just look at the punches landed as well as accuracy. I think that Hatton actually fought a better fight than De La Hoya, because though he lost via TKO he had Mayweather reeling for the first couple rounds. The ref was S****y in that fight and Hatton was too excited and eager, so if he settles down a rematch between him and Mayweather would be alright. De La Hoya had no heart in their fight and niether of them even hurt eachother, it was way overhyped.

However, I will never pay to see Mayweather fight De La Hoya or Hatton again, so if the majority of people have common sense like me, those fights will not be as big a draw as before. De La Hoya should just retire now to save face, and Hatton should get a little more experience against quality opponents before a rematch.

Cotto is the only way to keep P4P period. Cotto is the only logical boxer left for Mayweather to fight. And those of us who really care about this sport only want to see this fight, and we won't pay to watch rematches that were handedly won the first time around. I think Mayweather is ducking Cotto, because like previous people have stated, he's scared of getting hurt. Cotto isn't going to take ***** shots that score points and do no damage. Cotto will gladly forfeit a few points to keep his opponent boxing, and that's what Mayweather would have to do. So then the only question remaining is can Mayweather go toe to toe, with a bigger and stronger opponent?

  6. Call me silly but being pound for pound should mean being king at your weight class. Who`s he whipped to call himself the best at welterweight? DLH is a washed up great welterweight fighter but he`s a junior middleweight now and Hatton is a junior welterweight. How on God`s green earth can you call yourself king of any weight much less best pound for pound when you haven`t even solidified your position in your own weight class?

  7. Thumbs up to Angelsteps, I have to agree with her, Floyd is without a doubt ducking Cotto, and any other decent Welterweight out there, like Clottey, Margarito or even Williams.  Floyd has the same problem Hatton does, at 147 he just isn't the dominating fighter he was at the lower weights.  I think Floyd could still beat some of those guys, but the risk is much greater with them than anyone at 140 or below.

The P4P thing is an opinion, and until Floyd loses it will be tough to change people's opinions.  I personally think Cotto watched the DeLa Hoya fight with Mayweather and is salivating at the prospect of NOT ABANDONING THE JAB the second half of the fight like Oscar did.  DeLa Hoya showed the boxing world how to beat Mayweather and all the young guns want a piece of the "pretty boy"  True boxing fans want a Mayweather/Cotto fight.  Whether they get it or not is still up in the air, but I wouldn't hold my breath.  Floyd ducked Shane Mosley, and Cotto beat Shane, a older fighter I thought would have given Floyd lots of trouble.  Cotto has Floyd running scared, the girl above nailed this one.

I want no part of another DeLa Hoya or Hatton match with Floyd, there is no point and as much as I love boxing, I won't spend a dime on either one.

  8. Civility Toward The Blogbabble And Elmer---Priceless.

I'm Sure That Money Could Care Less.  The Money Is Coming In.  HE Is Top Draw Cotto Is Not.

  9. He may lose his Pound for Pound title if he dosnt fight Cotto. As for Oscar, he is a buisness man now, no longer a boxer, his heart aint in it. Floyd may take a dive so that they can fight a thrid time and make a shitload more money on a bullshit fight.

  10. Angel you make some really good point but I dont think he is ducking Cotto, because if you honestly think that Cotto has the same draw as De La Hoya or even Hatton you are crazy. I like everybody else wish he would not fight De La Hoya and go against someone like Cotto or Paul Williams but its all about $$ simple as that. To anwser the question I dont think he should lose it untill he loses but that is just me.

  11. The pound for pound title has nothing to do with who he fights. The mythical pound for pound title is really determined by your skill and ring craft. Roy Jones for years was beating up on mandatory challengers who could have worked over night stock at Walmart but if he looked good doing it he was pound for pound king. Floyd has the best skill in the sport with the exception of nobody. Manny is fun to watch but he lacks defense and a lot of people feel he lost the two fights to Marquez when he meets a good boxer its a done deal. Pavlik a hard puncher and is in good condition but the middleweight division is dead everyone is at light Heavyweight. Pavlik is very susceptible to being exposed by a good boxer Winky Wright,Vernon Forest,Joe Clazaghe,Hopkins. Pavlik is on the pound for pound list because he is the best middleweight. Other than that his skill doesn't compare to Floyd. If Pavlik, Manny and Floyd were all in the same weight class with the same height and weight Mayweaher smokes them easy.

  12. I'll make this plain and simple. He is avoiding Miquel Cotto for some reason. My guess is that matchup would draw a big pay per view as well. So I think the real reason is that if he can manage to beat Oscar again he is just gonna turn into an entertainer and not fight the real challenge in Cotto. But you have to hand it to Floyd his efforts is what has put himm in the position he is in now. Making lots of  money so when he does retire he can stay retired.

  13. Plain and simple, he should lose it if he DOESN'T meet Cotto, who is the only legitimate threat out there within his weight class.  Repeating his last two victories won't add anything.  Of course, now he's chasing pro wrestling and MMA, anything for $$$.  So who knows if he really cares about his P4P title at all any more?

  14. If he fights Hatton, definitely.

I personally will like to see the rematch against Oscar De La Hoya. I believe De La has what it takes to beat Mayweather. He was close last time, but he stopped using his jab for some reason. I didn't really get to see the Mayweather who Is better than De La Hoya in their fight.  It seemed to me that Mayweather just fought to survive.

I don't really see Pacquiao as the pound for pound king. He is mediocre fighter when it comes down to skill, he is just a tremendous puncher and he didn't prove to be better than Marquez.  I honestly thought Marquez did enough to win the fight, both of their fights.  I think that Marquez needed to get a kO in order to get a decision over the popularity of  Pacquiao.

  15. Seems kind of pointless to me but thats why boxing sucks sometimes.  The boxers have too much control.  He should be fighting Cotto,  Suga Shane, and Vernon Forest.  IF  he fights Oscar or Hatton again I'll back you up and give it to Pavlik or Manny.
