Question:

Should Google allow this?

If you search Martin Luther King Jr on Google a page comes up with the description reading:

"The truth about Martin Luther King: Includes historical trivia, articles and pictures. A valuable resource for teachers and students alike."

But if you go to the website it tells horrible lies about MLK. Saying that he would beat women and plagiarized his speeches.

The website gives links to white power websites too.

Shouldn't this website be forced to change their description to make it not so appealing to teachers and students. I actually clicked on this hoping to find info for my report on MLK. The url is www.martinlutherkin.org. Putting .org on it makes it seem more trusted shouldn't this site be taken down?

  1. Gosh that does sound really bad! I dont want to go on it lol. Cant you report it to google? But i dont think they wil take it down because comon there is p**n on the internet now :S

  2. You should complain

  3. The Internet is NOT censored and should stay that way.

What is YOUR proof that the website is lying.

  4. if you have the grounding of a decent education you can discriminate dubious sites from genuine ones.  Unfortunately most children's education comes from tv with all the vested interest baggage that goes with it.  Please no MORE censorship though!

  5. Yes I think it should. Alot of websites descriptions in google are lies. Google should really do something about it, maybe a report button for wrong descriptions

  6. If you search the phrase "great comedian"  Craig Ferguson pops up, that's  100 times more offensive....

  7. I think it's pretty lowly of the people who created the website, but I believe in freedom of speech, even (and perhaps especially) for those whose views are unpopular. Free speech is especially necessary for those whose opinion is unpopular, no matter how much we disagree with them. Google is just a facilitator for those who are searching, and should not filter their search results.

  8. you can writh them

  9. no buddy dats called freedom of print so as much as u hate them ur guna have to put up with it

  10. the site has already closed down guess they saw your question hehehehe

  11. No.

Absent the site committing or encouraging criminal offenses, just because you don't agree with the site's contents doesn't mean it should go away.  Where would you draw the line between what is "acceptable" and what is "unacceptable"?  The open exchange of ideas is crucial, even if you don't agree with those ideas.

The content alone should tell you the site isn't what you need, but it shouldn't be taken down.  The site's author does have rights.

What you're suggesting is what China does to it's population and it's internet.

  12. The Internet is about free expression of ideas. Nobody is ever going to censor it unless it breaks the data protection act or The law of the respective country it's hosting from.

  13. I can't stand when people post ridiculous answers without researching them first or make statements that don't even bother to answer the poster's questions at all.

Google dealt with this question a few years ago...

The short answer is that while they can not censor the site itself, they do NOT tolerate hate speech and have methods to de-rank websites that use certain key words to purposely promote it.
