There are already 700 buses prepared to get people out and more.

Jindal, thank goodness, seems to know what he's doing.

  1. It is hard to tell, honestly. If we get the eastern part of it then there is a good chance the aftermath will be devastating. BUT... that also depends on the intensity of the storm and how large it is. The eastern wall is always the worst part of the storm.

As far as the levees, there have been some modifications to them but they are not capable of withstanding another category 3, possible 4. I'm not saying they won't hold. I'm just saying that anything is possible at this point. The key is to stay calm and hope for the best. Only time will tell what will happen to us down here.

M S.... I have to say you pretty much hit the nail right on the head. I think you have the most accurate answer. Most of the 3 BILLION dollars allocated to fix the levees has more than likely made its way into the pockets of the politicians.

  2. When i lived in NOLA I watched a special that predicted a direct hit of a category 3 would flood Canal st. as much a 18 feet, that is the average height of a New Orleans style balcony. my prayers are with you & all of the city that Gustav misses NOLA!

I watched it way before katrina & I beleive it was a study done by loyola

  3. Worse, it will be a stronger hurricane and you can never really be prepared for something like that. There will still be people that will stay in there homes, then be trapped there like last time.

As far as the levies I don't think they will hold that much force from the storm and flooding. I honestly don't think they should have rebuilt there to begin with. Oneday the river WILL take over that city, its just a matter of time. Sorry for the bad info but its true.

  4. Hopefully, better this time.  Maybe the last time was just a "test."

  5. It's hard to say. The Superdome will NOT be used as a shelter this time, and after Katrina, more people will be likely to evacuate.

I live within an hour and a half of New Orleans, so I'll be keeping an eye on the storm, too (I lost my house to Katrina).

  6. It has to be  better....the levees are more prepared and this time i cant bet people arnt going to take a chance staying...i think new orleans is more prepared this time

yes i agree jindal seems to know what hes doing

  7. Even the most dramatic forecasts show Gustav making landfall as a Category 3 hurricane, with winds and storm surge MUCH less than Katrina.

Katrina only flooded the city-proper because the levee system was improperly built by the federal government.  Even then, the levee system ALMOST held.

About 10% of the city's population was not able to evacuate for Katrina and they were the ones who needed rescue.  Also among that 10% were the ones who looted.

Most of the population that was unable to evacuate for Katrina has not returned to the metro area, so the problems one saw on TV are likely to be MUCH less, even if another Katrina struck NOLA..

  8. I’ve read all these New Orleans answers and I can’t believe how wrong 90% of you are. NO is underwater to begin with and by no means a major port or provider of any substantial goods and services unless you are a drunk… The levees are still damaged (some very badly) and a category 1 direct hit will once again flood this city. NO has squandered federal funds, lied to the government about where federal funding was spent, blamed the US Army, FEMA and other agencies when in fact it was by their own stupidity that people were left there or stayed to loot… NO decimated Texas and surrounding states with criminals left there after Katrina, and yet they elect the same moronic mayor to run the city again.

Gustav may very well side swipe NOLA again, hopefully this time they learn… I have seen first hand what happened to the people who attempted to help Katrina victims and was appalled to even think of how that assistance was used… I think the residence of NOLA burned too many bridges and the rest of the US won’t be as quick to help. If anyone stays this time it’s their own death sentence and we cannot blame ourselves for the stupidity of others…

  9. I think the aftermath will be the same, especially if Ray Nagin is still the mayor of New Orleans -- what an idiot!  He was useless during Katrina.  All he was good for was pointing fingers at everyone else.

The upside is that Bobby Jindal is the governor now and seems to be much more on the ball than the previous governor.  Maybe he'll force evacuations before Gustav hits instead of waiting until people are stranded.

  10. that depends on the people there, hopefully you've learned a lesson from the rest of the disasters in the country. in a time of a disaster the last thing you should be doing is looting and killing others.  good luck and God Speed

  11. Ive been following tracks about hurricanes for 4-5 years now and i can assure you that with the certain circumstances going on in the easter atlantic The "High Pressure at the moment" and the conditions coming from the western USA " a low pressure that will move the High pressure to the middle atlantic" the preliminary path of this storm is not to be headed for New Orleans. Poor of those who evacuated or, are because this storm is going do a suprising turn. Im 70 % sure that it will hit Houston Texas if not it will turn to the floridian pennisula. Listen to my words. Its impossible for it to hit New Orleans this is not another katrina because this storm is coming from the carribean not the atlantic. Ty. You will see.

  12. So is it true it wont be hitting New Orleans?

  13. After Katrina hit, the city claims to be better prepared for the next big storm..hopefully this new storm wil not be that bad

  14. Better, Louisiana has a Governor (yes he is republican) who actually cares about his state and is already laying the groundwork for an evacuation plan.
